Why Your Heart Beats Differently When You Sleep

Your body may be resting, but your brain and heart are still talking.
When you fall asleep, you might think your body simply “switches off.”
It doesn't.
While you're sleeping, your brain moves through different stages, and your heart continuously responds to those changes. Your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and nervous-system activity can all shift throughout the night.

🌙 Sleep Isn't One Single State
Sleep is divided into different stages, broadly categorized as non-REM sleep and REM sleep.
During non-REM sleep, your body generally becomes quieter. As you move into deeper sleep, heart rate and blood pressure typically decrease, while the activity of the part of the autonomic nervous system that promotes rest and recovery becomes more dominant.
Your heart is still beating, of course, but it is generally working under different conditions than when you're awake and active.
Then something interesting happens.
You enter REM sleep.

REM, or rapid eye movement sleep, is the stage strongly associated with vivid dreaming.
During REM sleep, the brain becomes much more active. At the same time, your cardiovascular system can become more variable.
Heart rate and blood pressure can fluctuate more during REM than during deeper non-REM sleep.
In other words, your heart doesn't necessarily maintain the same steady rhythm throughout the entire night.
Your brain is changing states, and your cardiovascular system changes along with it.

Your heartbeat naturally varies from moment to moment.
One way scientists study this variation is through heart rate variability (HRV), which describes changes in the time between individual heartbeats.
HRV is influenced by the autonomic nervous system and can change during different sleep stages.
Rather than thinking of a healthy heart as a perfectly metronomic machine, it's more accurate to understand that a healthy cardiovascular system is constantly adapting to the body's changing conditions.
Sleep provides one of the clearest examples of that adaptability.

Understanding what happens to the heart during sleep gives researchers another way to study the relationship between the nervous system and cardiovascular health.
